(November 26, 2008)—The Department of Homeland Security says the alert comes from "an abundance of caution," as federal authorities are warn law enforcement agencies of a possible terror plot against the New York City subway system this holiday season.

An internal memo obtained by The Associated Press says the FBI has received a "plausible but unsubstantiated" report that al-Qaeda terrorists may have discussed attacking the subway system and says the discussion "reportedly involved the use of suicide bombers or explosives" on subway and passenger rail lines in and around New York City.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security describes the warning as a routine matter.

No changes are being made to the nation's threat level, but he says there may be an increased police presence in New York and other large metropolitan areas.

The memo says there are no details to confirm the plot ever went beyond "aspirational planning."

As much as I LOVE (not really) reading the always concerned and educated (ha) comments left by "Heart-Of-Texas", I have to say that the smug-ness of that comment doesn't set well with me. Now, I don't like the idea of Homeland Security, or controlling the people of the US with fear, however, this day and age, we have to be cautious. That being said - I find the comment left by "Heart-Of-Texas" pretty heartless. I have friends in New York... jerk
