(November 26, 2008)—At least 78 people were killed and 200 more were injured Wednesday when gunmen opened fire in a series of coordinated attacks on a crowded train station, luxury hotels and a restaurant popular with tourists in Mumbai.

A media report says little-known group Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Johnny Joseph, chief secretary for Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, says the death toll could rise further.

The gunmen attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark, along with the Oberoi and Taj Mahal hotels.

A top police official says gunmen are holding hostages at two luxury Mumbai hotels.

A.N. Roy, a senior police officer in Mumbai, said hostages are being held at the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels.

A British restaurant-goer at one of the hotels told Sky News television that the attackers were singling out Britons and Americans.

Alex Chamberlain said one young gunman ushered 30 or 40 people from the restaurant into a stairway and ordered everyone to put up their hands.

The gunman then asked one man where he was from, and when he said "Italy," the gunman said "fine."

Chamberlain managed to slip away from the group as they were forced to walk up the stairs, but says most were still being held hostage.

Later reports said an explosion and fire has hit one of two luxury hotels in Mumbai, India, that was stormed by heavily armed gunmen.

The landmark hotel that where the fire broke out is known as the Taj Mahal. Police report hostages are being held at the Taj and a second hotel.

And I thought the election of Obama was supposed to put us back in the good grace of the world as the terrorists lay down their weapons and shout "We love America".
