(November 27, 2008)—The death toll continued to rise Thursday in Mumbai, India in the wake of Muslim militant attacks on 10 sites Wednesday.
U.S. officials say at least three Americans are among the injured.
Authorities say 119 people are known dead and 288 injured.
A state official in India said Thursday the siege is over at Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel and the last three gunmen there have been killed.
Meanwhile, eight hostages have been freed from the headquarters of Jewish group in the city.
Earlier an Indian general said 10 to 12 gunmen are still holed up in two luxury hotels and a Jewish center where they’re holding dozens of hostages, including Americans.
Dozens of other people were evidently still hiding in their hotel rooms.
Hostages who got out of the hotels Thursday said they saw many bodies inside.
The witnesses said the attackers specifically targeted Britons and Americans.
The U.S. State Department is reporting that at least three Americans were injured in the terrorist attacks.
State Department spokesman Robert McInturff said the U.S. government has no information that any U.S. citizens died in the attacks.
He said he couldn't identify those injured.
The spokesman did say that U.S. officials have been checking with Indian authorities and hospitals, and have called American citizens who registered with the U.S. consulate.
"We have a lot of dual citizens who travel a lot. We have activated a phone tree. We're taking names of those we have and see who they know,” he said.
The White House, meanwhile, said President Bush has expressed condolences to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the attacks.
Press secretary Dana Perino said the president had the conversation with the Indian leader while spending Thanksgiving Day with his family at the Camp David mountaintop retreat in Maryland.
Perino said that Bush offered Singh "support and assistance" as he works to restore order in the populous and growing Southwest Asian nation.
The president also wished Singh success as Indian officials investigate "these despicable acts" in Mumbai.
