(November 27, 2008)—Doctors said former First Lady Barbara Bush was doing well Thursday at a Houston hospital where she underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer.

She’s expected to remain in the hospital until next week after undergoing the laparoscopic procedure.

Dr. Pat Reardon, who operated on Mrs. Bush at The Methodist Hospital, said 83-year-old former first lady is doing well after the minimally invasive procedure that involved a small incision in the abdomen and lasted for several hours.

Surgeons cleansed her abdominal area with fluid and closed a nearly 1.5 centimeter hole caused by the ulcer.

Mrs. Bush will be fed intravenously so the hole in her stomach can heal.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Mrs. Bush had been experiencing minor pain for several days and then it got worse.

Reardon says Mrs. Bush said it was the worst pain she ever had, "Worse than childbirth."
