(November 28, 2008)--Big Spring High School football and track star LaRay Woodard probably won’t be on the field Friday after he was arrested in what police say is part of an ongoing investigation into a string of burglaries.

A police spokesman said Woodard was arrested at school Tuesday after officers found a shotgun in the trunk of his vehicle believed to have been stolen in one of the robberies.

The 18-year-old senior was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon on school grounds, a state jail felony, and was later released from the Howard County Jail after posting $3,000 bond.

The senior receiver and defensive back scored touchdowns in each of Big Spring's playoff victories the past two weeks.

He finished second in the Class 4A long jump at the state track meet last spring.

He previously attended Mansfield Summit High School, where he also competed in football and track.

Big Spring coach Phillip Ritchey didn't return a phone call from The Associated Press, but Big Spring Assistant Superintendent Steven Saldivar said Woodard isn't expected to play in Big Spring's playoff game Friday against undefeated Everman in Abilene.

He said a decision on further disciplinary action will be made Monday when students return from the Thanksgiving break.

Hello...........probably and expected to miss? He should not have the chance to do anything in school much less worry about playing football. A gun found on school property is an automatic felony charge and expulsion.

He should tranfer to LaVega. He could play this week for them.
