Central Texas Man Injured in Auto-Bicycle Crash Friday Night Save Email Print

A | A | A

(November 28, 2008) – A Gatesville man was airlifted to Scott and White Hospital in Temple Friday night after the bicycle he was riding was struck by an SUV.

Officers at the scene did not identify the man, believed to be in his early 50s.

Gatesville firefighters, police and emergency medical personnel from Coryell Memorial Hospital System’s EMS were dispatched to the 100 block of North 19th Street at about 9:15 p.m.

The initial call was made by a firefighter over his department radio just seconds after the accident happened.

Fred Gray, EMS supervisor, told News 10 a witness said the man was struck from behind and the force of the crash propelled him over the hood of the truck and onto the street.

Gray said the victim suffered a closed head injury but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

At least two persons witnessed the wreck as they were walking nearby when the bicycle was struck.

Gatesville police are investigating the accident but as yet no citations have been issued.

Given this firefighters history it is not hard to see how this accident happened. The operator of the bike was traveling in the right direction and had a reflective vest on at the time of the crash, thus making him visible to any observant driver. Another thing that doesn't help in this situation is the fact that Gatesville has a volunteer fire department in which 90% of the members violate the law when responding to the station for a call.

well i only claimed to have common knowledge of the accident. the byciclist was sitting still in the road with dark clothing and no reflective equipment on his bycicle. forgive the spelling error.

I am glad the man was not killed. To knowledgable: you WALK against traffic, but ride bikes WITH traffic, following the same traffic rules as motor vehicles. Maybe you aren't so knowledgeable (correct spelling) after all.

The driver of the vehicle did stop and render aid. The firefighter that made the radio call was driving the suv that struck the man on the bycicle. The markings on the ground show that the person riding the bike was at least 4 feet off the curb in the middle of the street, and going with the flow of traffic instead of against it as we have all been taught is the correct way to ride. The firefighter was also issued a citation for failure to control speed. I'm guessing that when the street you are on in Gatesville isn't well lit you are supposed to go no more than 5 miles per hour and look for bycicles stopped in the middle of the road.

Thank God he was not killed. SUVs are gas hogs and seem to attract the gullable buyers who want one because it was a fad. I witnessed many that appear to have wreckless drivers who have not the sense to drive below the speed limit. This makes an unsafe vehicle even more dangerous to other drivers. Most fullsized ones have a high center of gravity.
