(December 2, 2008)—An elderly man accused of driving into a crowd of Cub Scouts during a Christmas parade in Overton in East Texas was freed on $500 bond Tuesday after he was charged with reckless driving.

Charles George, 82, of Troup is accused of driving his pickup around a barricade during the parade Monday night and slamming into the line of Scouts, injuring ten children and two women.

Just two children remain hospitalized Tuesday.

One is in serious condition, while the other was listed in good condition.

Overton city manager B.J. Potts said George surrendered his driver’s license as a condition of bond.

Officials said no alcohol was detected when George was arrested Monday night.

Overton is about 110 miles southeast of Dallas.

to anon: you can't renew by mail every time and after a certain age, you can't do it at all and i've seen driver's half his age who have NO business driving

OK If you will check all statistics, it is still the younger drivers who cause the most wrecks, injuries and damage. That is not even taking into consideration all the deaths caused by intoxicated drivers of all ages. So, there are plenty of drivers to be tested in every age bracket, not just the over 60's.

And at what age do we say "okay, now all have to take a drivers test every year"? There lies the problem.

Lol at p... you're probably right. But some of these people just renew by MAIL. If they have a good enough record they don't even have to go to the DPS office. I had to take a driving test to pass Driver's Ed so they should have to take one after a certain age too. For some people things start to deteriorate and they don't even realize it sometimes.

Congressmen and Senators are not going to do anything because then about 1/4 of them would no longer be able to drive!

Pardon me, (I refuse to insult you as you did me) but the initial story reported by KWTX stated it was a woman. I truly am sorry for ruining your day by not correcting myself sooner. ANONYMOUS - learn how to spell dear, it is retarded. Only one t.

DPS should really becareful and make sure the elderly are able to drive and know what they are doing before the issue anymore driver's liscences. They are people that should not be driving at all.

I totally agree with Michael in Kempner. I think that once a person reaches a certain age they need to retake both driving tests. This is not about bad mouthing anyone. It's about a serious public safety issue. I understand that the elerly don't want to feel helpless or useless. Alot of them have no choice but to drive when they really shouldn't, but for the sake of EVERYONE'S safety, something should be done. I'm not sure if it's the news stations/papers choice of news coverage, but it seems to me that there are alot of stories about elderly drivers crashing into buildings or crowds. Of course this can also be said about alot of other drivers. Old and young. With that in mind, perhaps every driver should be given a new test after so many years of driving?

BOB, really, think about dude, you dont have to be a brain surgeon to know that absolutely age has something to do with it. if it is not Alzheimer's, dementia, confusion, eye conditions, along with other conditions that could cause an older person to not really and fully comprehend actions. that is why it is so important for laws to be changed for older drivers, starting early, before something like this and worse happens.

Just when are our elected congressmen and Senators going to realize that it is time to tackle the issue of how old is too old to be allowed to drive anymore. How many deaths, injuries, and damaged property bills are going to be necessary before we finally come to grips with the fact that after a certain age a physical driving test is needed as a condition of license renewal and if the test can not be passed no license should be renewed. And before we get any remarks about teenagers writing this response I am over 50 myself.

Re: Anonymous and Kris, what 'she' are you talking about? Did you even read the story?

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 2, 2008 at 04:23 PM
kris, where do you see that a woman was driving? i read it and is says "him" and not "she". c'mon kris how retarted could you be?

Posted by: Kris Location: Waco on Dec 2, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Okay Bob.. why did he drive past the barricade? To get to the other side? It IS entirely possible that age has something to do with. Alzheimer's perhaps?? Confused and didnt know where he was going. Don't think he needs his license back. But WILL that stop him?

Posted by: BOB Location: Belton on Dec 2, 2008 at 02:48 PM
Do you really think age had anything to do with it? I mean really, even someone that old knows you don't go around a barricade and he had to see the kids unless hes blind as well as stupid. That's just like the idiots that drive around the barricades and then hit high water and get washed away...STUPID....

Did she have some medical condition that caused her to freak out?? That's just awful. Prayers to all involved.

Wish someone would have realized that she was not able to drive. My prayers go to the injured and hope everyone fully recovers.
