Overnight Fire Destroys One House, Damages Four Other Structures

Three Central Texas fire departments battled a house fire that spread to adjacent structures before it was brought under control

(December 03, 2008)-A wind-blown fire destroyed one house and damaged four adjacent structures overnight in Mexia.

Mexia Fire Chief Clayton Shivers told News 10 the initial call came in at 8:52 p.m. Tuesday for a structure fire at 602 East Carthage St.

By the time units arrived that frame house was fully involved and fire had spread to 602-B East Carthage to the south and 600 East Carthage to the west.

Shivers said the home and garage apartment at 602 East Carthage were destroyed; the houses at 602-B and 600 East Carthage suffered severe damage and a home 608 East Carthage and a business - Media Plumbing - both sustained heat and water damage.

The fire was initially reported by residents at the 608 East Carthage address, Shivers said.

The house at 602 East Carthage had two residents, both of whom escaped the blaze without injury.

The 602-B and 600 East Carthage homes were not occupied.

Shivers said the entire Mexia Fire Department was dispatched and assistance quickly came from Wortham and Groesbeck.

Shivers said it took firefighters about an hour and a half to gain control of the fires.

I am very thankful to the men and women of the Mexia, Grosebeck and Wortham fire departments. My parents live at the 608 address, and my wife and children were visiting them the night that this fire occurred. Their quick action and valiant efforts may have very well saved the lives of a good majority of my family members. I am currently overseas, and I couldn't feel any safer about the situation on the home front. The fact that we have outstanding individuals, like those serving in the Mexia, Grosebeck and Wortham fire departments, keeping us safe, really puts my mind at ease while I am away from home. THANK YOU!!!
