(December 3, 2008)—Ravis Neal Key, II, 23, of Killeen, was sentenced to 216 months in federal prison Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Waco for intoxication manslaughter in the death of a Fort Hood soldier.

U.S. District Judge Walter Smith also ordered Key to pay $8,086 in restitution and to serve three years on supervised release after completing the prison term, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton said.

Sutton said Key was driving at more than 75-miles-per-hour on June 30 when his vehicle slammed into a second vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Tank Destroyer Boulevard and Clarke Road.

The force of the collision propelled the stopped vehicle into the intersection and into the path of a third vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle, Sgt. Andre M. Araujo, was critically injured in the crash, Sutton said, and died the next day at Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

“During treatment at the hospital following the accident, an examination of the Key’s blood contents revealed the presence of controlled substances including high levels of benzodiazepines, opiates, amphetamines and cannabinoids,” Sutton said.

Key pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter on Oct. 9.

This was murder, plain and simple. The laws are twisted. My daughter does not have a husband and my granddaughters do not have a dad. No amount of money will do. No time served will bring him back. Nothing but God's love will get us through this tragedy. We miss you son!

18 years and $8086 does not seem like a high price to pay for taking someones life. Surely the dead mans life was worth more than this. I am sure his family thinks so. Any family wouold.
