On Dec. 5, 1835, Ben Milam and the 300 men who volunteered to fight when he asked, “Who will go with old Ben Milam into San Antonio?” launched a surprise attack that marked the beginning of the end of the first major campaign of the Texas Revolution. From October through early December of 1835, volunteers had laid siege to a Mexican Army in San Antonio de Béxar, but their leaders, concerned about the approach of winter and shrinking supplies, considering withdrawing. Word of flagging Mexican morale, however, led to Milam’s now famous question and the early-morning attack. The commander of the Mexican troops, Gen. Martín Perfecto de Cos, sought terms of surrender on Dec. 9, but Milam didn’t live to enjoy the moment. A sharpshooter’s bullet killed him on Dec. 7.
