(August 16, 2006)—A United Airlines flight from London to Dulles Airport was diverted to Boston’s Logan Airport Wednesday after a woman became emotionally distraught onboard the plane.
The woman had Vaseline, a screwdriver, matches and a note that made reference to al-Qaeda, The Associated Press reported.
The pilot declared an in-flight emergency because of the disturbance.
CNN reports that fighter jets escorted the airliner to Logan, where the plane landed without incident.
The more than 180 passengers aboard the flight were exiting the plane, which authorities will inspect thoroughly.
The incident comes while the nation’s airports remain under a heightened level of alert in response to the arrest of two-dozen people in England in connection with an alleged plot to blow up US-bound planes over the Atlantic Ocean.
