(August 17, 2006)--An international nonprofit group announced Thursday its members witnessed evidence of fraud in Mexico's presidential election.
San Francisco-based Global Exchange is urging Mexican officials to grant a request from the race's apparent second-place finisher to do a full vote recount.
Conservative ruling-party candidate Felipe Calderon leads by less than one percent.
Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has insisted on a recount of the July 2 election.
Calderon says the election was clean and he's called on Lopez Obrador to accept the pending final decision of the Federal Electoral Court.
Group members observed 60 polling places and found evidence of fraud or irregularities at each one.
Group director Ted Lewis says the alleged evidence ranged from polling places with more ballots cast than registered voters to vote buying.
