On December 15, 1938, ground was broken for the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt participated in the ceremony and then returned in November 1939 to lay the cornerstone. The monument, which is modeled on the Pantheon of Rome, was dedicated in 1943.
