(December 13, 2008)—About half of the 350 residents of the small Bosque County town of Cranfills Gap northwest of Waco are spending the weekend in Las Vegas, courtesy of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which is spending about $2.5 million for the five day trip and marketing campaign.

As many as 120 Cranfills Gap residents who could get off work and are 21 or older were scheduled to fly to Sin City Saturday.

They’ll stay in swanky hotels, eat at fancy restaurants and see glitzy shows, all for free.

The trip does come with a catch.

The group will be followed by crews armed with video cameras to record video for tourism commercials that will air next year.

Tanya Davidson says she plans to marry her fiancée in a drive-through chapel.

The trip “couldn't have come at a better time,” she said.

The residents are scheduled to return to Texas on Wednesday.

Glad everyone got back safety and had a good time. No, we did not get robbed. Some of us who had a chance to go but decided to stay behind are happy for the ones that went. So if you did not get asked to go it is because you did not go put your name on the list. They didn't come and knock on your door and ask if you wanted to go. Why to go for those of you who went and had a good time. When is the new sign coming that reads Cranfills "Vegas" Gap?

It is true that a lot of people from Cranfills Gap went to Las Vegas. But it is also true that a lot of people from Cranfills Gap DID NOT go to Las Vegas and that bunch is watching out for the interests of and doing the chores for their friends and neighbors who DID go to Las Vegas. Neighbors helping neighbors is what happens in the Gap all the time. No one keeps score. The streets are not rolled up. Propane is being delivered, the mail is being delivered, school is happening, the LowDog is serving coffee and cattle cubes, the CPA is doing normal business, flat tires are getting fixed, the gas station is in full swing and City Hall is open for business. Cranfills Gap is a viable little town. Perhaps that is why the Las Vegas crew liked us so much.

Not too smart to run this story "before" the residents leave or while they're gone. Plenty of homes to be robbed since your station announced they had been vacated for a period of time. Next time air the story AFTER they return! Duh!
