(December 15, 2008)—San Antonio investigators are recommending that a police officer who ran over a colleague on his way to a shoplifting call be charged with manslaughter.

Officer Robert Davis died two weeks ago after he was struck by a patrol car driven by Officer David Seaton as he cleared road flares.

Seaton was on his way to a shoplifting call in his cruiser when he hit another car.

The collision caused spun Seaton’s cruiser out of control.

Davis was pinned underneath the patrol car.

San Antonio police spokesman Joe Rios said investigators now believe Seaton ran a red light and did not have his flashing lights on at the time of the collision.

Traffic investigators forwarded the case to the district attorney's office and have recommended a manslaughter charge against Seaton.

The 46-year-old officer was critically injured in the accident and remains at a rehab facility.

Shame on the cops? I hope that if you ever need an officer to help you that you remember what you just said. Remember that if you call 911 for assistance.

Shoplifting is not supposed to be a life or death situation. Some cops were just not made to be cops, they should do some kind of psychological tests to see if they have a "power" wish, or an inflated super-ego

Wow! Didn't see that coming. For them to pursue criminal charges is pretty steep. Wondering if this is not his first occurence or if he has other negative reports that would lead them to pursue this course of action.

I am betting that this will all go away soon. The police are NOT held to the same standard as us peons! Reference if a police officer busts in your door on a "no knock" warrant on the wrong address, yours, or worse yet, some paid drug informant gives the cops your address to try to get the charges dropped or lessened against himself, and the cops bust in unannounced and you defend your home and shoot the police officer. Now you, as an innocent person, defend your home, by shooting this unannounced violent intruder dead and get arrested for murder. All for defending your home. If a cop shoots anyone, and then the person shot is unarmed, the police say "I believed he was armed." and the case is found to be a justified shooting. The home owner doesn't have that or any defense. The Police will see the innocent home owner in prison, possibly on death row for defending his home against violent instrusion because the dead person was a cop! SO MUCH FOR JUSTICE, SO MUCH FOR EQUALITY!

It is a sad an unfortunate situation. What bothers me is we expect so much from our law enforcement, yet criticize every mistake they make. I am sure that if Officer Seaton failed to turn his flashing lights on, and this caused the accident, that it was an honest mistake made while trying to protect the people and businesses of San Antonio. Not a reckless act performed by some "renagade cop". I don't disagree that there are some law enforcement personnel that bend the rules in their favor to some degree, however, I believe that the majority are out there every day doing the best job they can.

if he had run over me, it would have been my fault for not getting out of the way, but he hits another officer and they take a serious look at the situation. police have to obey traffic laws just like the rest of us, the problem is, nobody is policing the police. they are the worst drivers but you would never know it from thier driving records because if they ever do get stopped for a violation, they show thier badge, and away they go. shame on the cops,( again )
