Good morning, it’s Thursday, Dec. 18, the 353rd day of 2008. There are 13 days left in the year. A dense fog advisory is in effect for much of the region through noon today. There’s a chance of drizzle or light rain this morning and a chance of showers this afternoon with highs in the 70s. Lows tonight will drop only into the upper 50s. Enjoy it. Another cool down is on the way.

Fifty years ago today, on Dec. 18, 1958, the world's first communications satellite, SCORE (Signal Communication by Orbiting Relay Equipment), nicknamed "Chatterbox," was launched by the United States aboard an Atlas rocket. From space, it broadcast a message on a short-wave frequency to the world recorded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower:

"This is the President of the United States speaking. Through the marvels of scientific advance, my voice is coming to you from a satellite traveling in outer space. My message is a simple one: Through this unique means I convey to you and all mankind, America's wish for peace on Earth and goodwill toward men everywhere."
