(December 21, 2008) - Three people were injured Sunday when a car crashed into an outdoor furniture shop near a gas station in Copperas Cove Saturday afternoon.

It happened at the Cook's Mini Mart on West Highway 190 at 1:27 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told News Ten the driver of what they described as a speeding white sedan ran a stop sign and the car crashed into two San Antonio women who had stopped to do some last minute Christmas shopping at the store.

Both women suffered broken legs and were airlifted to Scott and White hospital in Temple.

The crash also injured the owner of the furniture shop who was taken to Darnall Army Medical Center for observation.

Police arrested the driver of the car, Taedo Nena, in connection with the accident.

He’s facing complaints charging intoxicated assault.

this really has nothing to do with red lights, or cops being understaffed. the person that ran into us had a suspended license and wasnt even driving his car. and this was his third dwi. this was a random event, albeit a horrible one, but noone could have seen coming. he was charged with intoxication assault by the way. 3 counts. and i heard that he was very sarcastic when they arrested him. i hope he's having a very nice time in jail, cuz we're having a hell of a time with surgerys and physical therapys.

Anonymous in CC that made the last comment. You must either be a cop or a family member. If not then you just have some sense. Officers can only do so much. I don't really think I've heard of a city that isn't overworked, underpaid, and understaffed. Not always an excuse. I do know that there are times when officers don't do their job. But everytime something happens we blame it on the cops. Go try their job for a minute. Now yes there are bad ones but the good ones have to work harder because of them. They can't be everywhere all the time. Accidents happen to everyone. Try living with knowing you weren't there. Maybe you could've stopped it and maybe not. You don't know. Maybe there's an officer sitting at home feeling guilty right now because he/she wasn't in that area and couldn't do anything. I know there are bad cops but quit trying to give them all a bad rep. There isn't enough of them and they do what they can. Yeah that sucks when it's you that suffers. Apply for the job!

Maybe, if Cove Police wasn't so tied up with other calls. It is impossible to have a patrol unit monitor every intersection of the city of every given minute. Great Monday morning quarterbacking! The driver was intoxicated, has nothing to with yellow or red!!!! It has to do with an intoxicated driver blowing a stop sign and striking the three people. It is easy to point the finger at an understaffed law enforcement agency. And there is not a charge, Intoxication Assault with a deadly weapon. Read the Texas Penal Code.

This particular intersection might as well not have a traffic light since you can be there anytime of the day or night and you will see someone speed through the red light. And on one occassion right in front of a patrol car.

This accident had nothing to do with slowing down, running a red light, or having a better police presence...the person driving the car was a DRUNK DRIVER!!!!! Thank God that everyone lived through this, and hopefully the drunk driver will get major time in jail.

Charges should be Intoxicated assault with a deadly weapon!! Sorry for the innocent shoppers, store owner.

Wasn't this intersection the scene of yet another accident only this past week? We need more surveilance at these intersections. People do not understand "Yellow" slow down and RED means STOP. Just ask a school employee about "slow" in a school zone. Doesn't always happen and never a police car present..

Hope that they recover soon and the driver gets to spend the holiday season in a detox unit. Sounds like a very dangerous location. Copperas Cove government or chamber of commerce should visit the victims and give flowers, cards and condolences because these were city visitors xmas shopping in their city. They should give the store owner special considerations also.

I was there after the accident and helped calm the two female victims down and calmed family members down as well. I'm glad that they are going to be ok. I am thankful that they weren't seriously injured. I wish them both and their families a Merry Christmas and a speedy recovery and hope they can put this nightmare behind them!

That specific area is known for people running red lights, driving too fast, etc. I have seen some bad accidents at that area over the years, yet only see the Cove police coming to the scene to do the paperwork after the fact. It would be nice to see police presence to act as a deterrent on occasion. It might cut down on the crazy drivers.
