(December 23, 2008)—The suspect in a series of deadly rush-hour shootings in Dallas was a former Utah state trooper who shot and injured himself after a standoff with police, authorities said Tuesday evening.

During a news conference Tuesday evening, Dallas police said ex-trooper Brian Smith, 37, was responsible for at least one death that resulted from the shootings.

Dallas police declined to comment on a second death in neighboring Garland because it was outside their jurisdiction.

Smith is in critical condition at a Dallas hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Before his standoff with police, two people were shot to death and a third was injured in four rush-hour shootings Monday along or near a Dallas-area highway.

Police said the victims appeared to have been selected at random.

A spokesman with the Utah Department of Public safety says Smith had been a trooper since 1996 but resigned in May because of "personal issues."

He was wanted in Texas on robbery and burglary warrants.

Well, he wasn't hispanic, but it appears that the truck drivers he was trying to and did kill are. Sounds like a vigilante vendetta to me. Too bad he came all the way to Texas and did this. He should have stayed in Utah.

What does it matter what his race is? You are a racist not a texan.

Could you at least headline that this was a UTAH State Trooper???? First impression puts Texas State Troopers in a bad light.

We all have "issues" we just don't open fire on random people. If this guy lives he should be locked away for a very long time.

This is just horrible! To think of these people innocently driving home to be with families and then to be taken in such a horrific way! What is wrong with people?

Obviously he had "personal issues".... I'm sure the families of these victims will have "personal issues"... Maybe to work out their "personal issues" he should be thrown in a car, and let them shoot HIM. Eye for an eye... random shootings on highways are probably the most scary thing because you never know if you are the target until its too late.
