(December 31, 2008)-- Former Bryan elementary school teacher Bruce Unger, 29, who fled the country after he was charged with six counts of sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child was in custody Wednesday in Brazos County after he was transferred late Tuesday night from New York.

Unger was arrested earlier this month in Ukraine, where authorities said he had been working as an English instructor since November 2007.

According to the Brazos County Sheriff's Office, Unger arrived Tuesday night at 11:45 p.m. and was booked into jail shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Brazos County Commissioners approved expenses for two sheriff's deputies to travel to New York to get Unger, who waived extradition.

In Bryan, Unger taught at Neal Elementary, coached at-risk boys soccer and was named "Most Caring Coach" by USA Today in 2005 for the difference he made in the lives of his students.

Unger was arrested in 2006 after allegations surfaced about the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old boy.

Additional charges were filed after two teens stepped forward alleging abuse.

Days before his trial was set to begin in November 2007, Unger fled.

Amen Bill. He should be ordered some counseling and then given a second chance. Everyone makes mistakes. Just because he got overly affectionate, everyone is quick to think he is so evil. Love is what makes the world go round.

Before we get too far into mob mentality, what Bill said was that as humans, we are all CAPABLE of doing good and doing evil. We all have the makings of heroes and Hitler all at the same time. How we deal with that is what makes us who we are. With that said, sexual criminals don't belong in our society.

At Bill: Why flee the country if you're innocent? He needs to be locked up and kept away from our kids.

Hey Bill - Speeding, writing a bad check, cheating on a test, those are Human "mistakes"................sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child is not. It is Morally Reprehensible and I hope that this sick S.O.B. is put where he belongs for the rest of his natural life.

so Bill? sounds like you've thought of molesting children too because you are sure defending this pervert. Anyone that molests a child is not human and it's not just a mistake.... a mistake is saying 2 plus 2 equals 5, not molesting a child ... Even imperfect people are not perverted child molesters. I cannot understand why anyone including his family would take up for this man. Bill if he had molested one of your family members would you be on here defending this piece of trash?

First of all, teachers, like the rest of us, are humam and make mistakes... some of them are tragic and lead to long term problems on the part of the victim... nut those of you who stand up and declare that you would not be caught dead doing such a thing.... welllll I just hope you are being true to yourself and never do, because EVERYONE is imperfect and is capable of doing the very same thing this man has alledgedly (Thats right.... here in the United States, a person IS innocent until proven guilty.... or have you all forgotten about that???)why then, you ask, did he run?? Well, child molestation is an extremely serious and VERY emotionally charged accusation... one even CHARGED with this is labled an animal, even if he (or she) didn't do anything... so, he MAY have been wanting to void that chaos all together.I will pray that justice will be fairly waged in this case, and that those of you being righteous will be sucessful in being perfect

I am so sick and tired of hearing about teachers and their lack of discernment lately. As an educator myself, I cannot even imagine wanting to do anything that would be harmful to my students. I know that a thourough background check cannot reveal everything in someone's background, but come on. You mean to tell me that this is something that has just reared its ugly head within the past few years of you teaching and being around kids. There had to be tell tell signs before they were hired. Last time I checked we are not animals, we are humans. Humans that have the ability to control their emotions, urges etc. Get a grip and think about what you are doing before you do it - oh yeah, you can't - you are an animal.

UGH! Just goes to show you that these sickos could be ANYONE. He sure did "make a difference in the lives of his students". Caring coach my @#%! We are supposed to trust our schools to educate our children and keep them safe, and somehow these perverts slip under the radar. Makes me sick to my stomache. I am glad they now have him in custody where "hopefully" justice will be served.
