(January 2, 2009)--Efforts to move a World War II-era destroyer back to its berth in Galveston have been complicated by the discovery of a 25-foot boat wedged beneath the ship’s hull.

The USS Stewart is one of only three U.S. Navy destroyers built during World War II that haven't been scrapped.

It was moved from its berth at Seawolf Park after Ike made landfall on Sept. 13.

After floodwaters subsided, members of the Cavalla Historical Foundation, which maintains the Stewart, found the mystery boat wedged beneath the ship’s hull.

Foundation curator John McMichael said the boat has a green hull, an 11-foot stern and bumpers hanging over its side, but work crews have been unable to find a name or any other identifying markings.

The Stewart was added to the National Register of Historic Places earlier this year.

It began North Atlantic convoy operations in 1944 and made 30 crossings.

It was decommissioned in January 1947.
