(January 5, 2008)—Police were looking Monday for a man who robbed a newspaper reporter Sunday night outside the office of the Temple Daily Telegram.

The woman, whom police did not identify, told officers she was walking on the south side of the building around 8:50 p.m. Sunday when a man holding a gun approached her and demanded her purse.

She gave him the purse, police said, and he ran to a waiting vehicle and drove off to the east and south, police said.

The car was described as a small older light-colored sedan.

The victim described the robber as a tall thin black male who was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.

No one was injured.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call the Temple Police Department at (254) 298-5500.

Reply to Reason....your response to Lynz was "if it offends...don't read", yet you are responding to someone else in each of your posts here. One could easily say if you don't like the "prevelant tones" of this blog, then frankly you don't read them. By the way..a description is just what it is...a description...if the truth hurts..then maybe you shouldnt read the news. Have a nice day.

Lynz what was similar about the criminal? If you have something to say say it loud and proud. Maybe "those folks" that comment about the blatant discremenatory tone found on some of these post do so because they find it is a prevalent tone. Once the need to silence those ignorant individuals is not there, I will be quiet as a mouse. :) It is ALL of our responsibility to shed light on this subject and if my post offend you then quite frankly don't read them. Have a nice day.

You would think the the Temple Tell-a-lie would have better security for its employees. The old downtown area is delapitated and full of hoodlums.

To Fellow Reporter Location: Work in Waco... You tell her that Texans are not the type to put up with this. If I had been there I would have defended her (armed or not) even though I don't know her. Having a concealed gun isn't an answer by itself, there is the question of using it! However, anyone who says "It may have been taken away from her" is assuming that women are unwilling to shoot someone to protect themselves and their loved ones (remind yourself what does "assume" make you???). I disagree. My wife would put a bullet between your eyes for trying to harm her, her family, or an unknown victim. She refuses to be a victim and has a CCW to enforce it with. Me? I would be the one standing over the dead crook explaining to the cops that the crook made a mistake, he tried this in Texas. Gun Control only stops good people. Gun Freedom empowers honest citizens and weakens criminals. That's why politicians LIKE gun control, so they don't have to be afraid of the peons!

To William Location Waco... No I did not miss the "gun" in the article. I am confident that the person would not have accosted a man. He is obviously one of those "tough" idiots who think a gun makes people do what he says for them to do. I have had experience with that type of person, and I FED THEM THEIR WEAPON even though I was completely unarmed and flat broke (not a penny on me). I simply refused to do what the crook wanted. He pointed the gun, demanded my wallet, and ate the gun the hard way. This would not have occurred to you to do if you had been the one mugged? Maybe you'll say how stupid that was, but frankly I figured I was dead anyway if I did what the crook wanted, so why not fight back? This was in New York City, home of gun control, and I never turned him into the cops because they would have jailed me for fighting back. I just left the crook broken up, and walked on. Better that way. Now I carry concealed because I am lazy, 2 oz. of pressure compaired to fists!

TO LYNZ...Well said. I could'nt agree more. People are too sensitive. They don't want to hear about one of their own doing something bad. I'm all about given the full description..white, black, brown whatever, if it may help catch the thug..If a certain race or group of people is mentioned more than another then they as a group need to be more accountable and offer more guidance to their own..any group!

I was attacked once in a simular way by a simular criminal. I was hit in the chest and knocked to the ground. I'm all for giving every detail {including race} to find these scums. He was found, had many priors and is now in prison. I also got a CHL after that. I'm glad the reporter is okay. I send her sincere well wishes and to hang in there, justice will be served. And to some of the folks that comment about closet bigots, racists, blah blah on EVERY story, I say to you, it takes one to know one.

Not against carrying a concealed weapon but I don't think it's a fix all. Sometimes it can prove fatal. What if the perp would have taken the gun from her? He might have walked away with a lot more than her purse. Just food for thought. I think your stance is that a gun would have deterred the criminal, would not have an armed security guard?

Firstly, I know this lady. I see her around stories a lot she is sweet, intelligent, sensible and funny so Marlin she will certainly like your humor. I spoke with her as soon as it happened. I wanted to know which reporter it was, we all work together even if she is my competition. This normally confident woman was obviously traumatized. She wasn't walking around Temple, she works nights but everyone should have the right to walk the streets. This lady is new to our area, she is from a different country and is a lot more trusting than us Americans. Carrying a concealed weapon is outrageous, we face too many odd situations. As she said, 5 minutes doesn't pass without a police vehicle passing that particular area. The building is a few blocks from the Police Department. To DURANGO - her description was fine. This mans face is embedded in her head, she'll find him you watch. Rather than pick faults why not send her well wishes. No one was hurt - physically. Mentally is different.

To Marlin, should have attacked a man? Did you miss the part about the gun??? Change your statement to a man with a gun.

To the person that said "She must have made an easy target of herself. Most all of the businesses in downtown Temple has died out and is deserted" HELLO did you not read that Temple Daily Telegram is downtown and that is where she works!? Probably just walking to her vehicle after getting off work, I dont think that means she is making an easy target of herself. Besides, have you not been downtown temple in awhile? There are a few bars and several nice restaurants and pleanty of busiensses down there-they are not deserted.

No,TDT should not hire security. If the victim had been carrying a concealed handgun, which is legal,if you possess a CHL the suspect would not have robbed her. Chances are she would not even had to shoot. He would have scampered off like a coward at the sight of a weapon. Just another example of why we as citizens should arm ourselves. The police can't protect us. Bless them for the job they do, but they can't always be at the right place at the right time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 5, 2009 at 05:11 PM
Just another reason to get a Concealed Handgun License. Maybe if she had a license, she would be carrying and could have defended herself against the scumbag. The only good criminal is a dead criminal!

Hey Curt H., did it occur to you that maybe the ethnicity of the offending person is printed so that someone might turn him in or offer a tip?

Posted by: Reason Location: Belton on Jan 5, 2009 at 04:55 PM
I don't feel ethnicity of the perp should be witheld however I could do without a lot of the generalizations I read by closet bigots and racist. Curt in Waco you won't find it on any "nationwide report" but I assure you that broad stroke that many folks in this "bible belt" area are racist has been justly earned. To be fair I believe you must reconcile both. I agree with the others that suggested this area is ripe with crime. Maybe TDT should hire security personell to look out for the saftey of thier employees due to thier locale.

Guess the cops are after the real tough crimes, prostitutes, illegal parking, and of course enforcement of the city ordinances that deal with the unlawful home owners!

Posted by: Curt H. Location: Waco, TX on Jan 5, 2009 at 03:33 PM
I know it seems to be very common news and maybe even sensationalism, but should KWTX specify the ethnicity of the offending person. I know over the last several years it has most certainly leaned towards a certain type, but when KWTX (or ANY other news entity) specifies that ethnicity it just brings out all of the comments by folks who cannot accept the facts and numbers being reported annually in the news nationwide. It IS disheartening but it is also a fact. Lets just leave this particular detail out to prevent all of the "we are be discriminated against" and the hateful retaliation comments between different races. People are people but we all know that the numbers do not lie. People however do. Lets let it go and move on. Let the big fish hook themselves.

She must have made an easy target of herself. Most all of the businesses in downtown Temple has died out and is deserted. It is not a safe place to wander around at night. Being a reporter it seems she could have did a better job at detailing the robber and identifying the type of auto.

Posted by: Judy Location: Central Texas on Jan 5, 2009 at 02:29 PM
Maybe the Temple Daily Telegram will actually cover this robbery since it happened to one of their own!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Temple on Jan 5, 2009 at 01:41 PM
anyone from temple should know that you do not walk around downtown after dark by your self. that is not the best area around!

Posted by: Yoe1966 Location: Temple on Jan 5, 2009 at 12:52 PM
The police station used to be right across the street from the Telegram, but they have moved into a new cold, ugly "fortress" up the street.

Sounds like that commercial that AT&T made, the one where the news reporter ended up being in the wrong place for the explosion and the commercial ended with the quote "This is So and So, and I am the news...."!! Ha! Seriously though, I'm glad she's alright. I'm sure someone will have to say how BLACKS are so down trodden, without fathers, no money, and it's all the white people's fault, etc. etc., that this is the only way they know how to act, etc. etc. etc.! Okay you racists, let's hear it! Come on! Don't be shy! You know you want to blame society, not the criminal for the robbery! So do it! Meanwhile, I'll go back to laughing...at the irony, not the crime or the female victim. I will say one last thing.... It sounds like someone had no guts attacking a woman that way. Sounds like they didn't have the guts to attack a man. Too bad! If they had attacked a man, they probably would have been handed their broken heads! Too bad it didn't happen!
