(January 5, 2009)— An American-Eagle plane whose crew declared an in-flight emergency because of smoke in the cockpit landed safely early Monday afternoon in Killeen.

American Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said 47 passengers and three crewmembers were aboard the Embraer-145 turbo-prop.

John Sutton of the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport said an in-flight emergency was declared after a smoky haze developed in the cockpit, but said smoke dissipated shortly before the plane landed.

Passengers told News 10 after deplaning they had not been aware of the emergency.

The airport currently experienced a backup of passengers because the airplane involved in the emergency was taken out of service until it can be inspected.

Normally it would have refueled and turned around to Dallas with a planeload of passengers.

Killeen fire department units were dispatched to Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport just before 12:30 p.m. after the plane’s crew reported smoke in the cockpit and possibly an engine fire.

The plane landed about five minutes later and passengers were evacuated without incident.

There was no fire.
