(January 07, 2009)—A Coryell County family begins their New Year homeless after a fire burns through their mobile home -- for the second time in twelve months.

The call came in around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, on a day that has kept firefighters all over Central Texas working around the clock.

The report indicated that two out buildings were on fire at a residence in the community of King, about 15 miles southwest of Gatesville.

Firefighters were already on the scene of a house fire in Gatesville*.

By the time Gatesville firefighters arrived on the scene of the King fire, flames had already spread to and engulfed a mobile home on the property.

The mobile home was occupied, but the residents were able to escape the fire without injury.

The fire however had responders from both Gatesville and nearby Levita on their toes because a small propane tank near the rear of the house exploded.

Ammunition stored in the house also began to explode as the home burned, firefighters said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire by about 7:45 p.m.

The entire back of the home was destroyed and about two-thirds of the rest of the structure sustained heavy fire damage.

Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden said the fire started from a shorted out extension cord plugged into the washing machine.

Firefighters say this very same family lost their mobile home to a fire on January 11, 2008.

The home lost in Wednesday's fire had been donated as a replacement to the home lost in 2008.

The American Red Cross was called out to assist the family of three.

Gatesville Fire
The first call came in at 6:36 p.m. when a home on Oak Drive in Gatesville caught on fire.

Gatesville Fire Chief Billy Vaden said a small explosion started a fire in the bedroom of the home but the fire was contained to that room and one closet.

Firefighters arrived on scene and had the blaze under control within minutes and were busy trying to find the cause of the blaze when the King fire was dispatched.

The cause of the Gatesville fire remains under investigation.

Yes they did own their property, but the home was to old to insure by insurance standards for the manufacted home in which they lived. No it was an extension cord designed to be used for the application in which it was being used. I only hope that you do not end up on the receiving end of a structure fire in which people call you stupid or say you have no common sence so you might feel the way they do at this time. If you do not know the facts of what is going on then maybe you need to keep your mouth shut. These people are fine people who would do what ever they can to help somebody in need and now they are the ones that need the help. Have a little compasion for your fellow man and keep your idiotic comments to yourself.

Most likely used an undersized extension cord. Having common sense would help.

Anonymous, Have you ever thought that some people can't afford insurance??? I myself am a married college student. My husband and I don't own new vehicles, but we get by the best we can. We don't have a whole lot of money but all of our money goes to tuition, books, and other necessities of a college student. My husband and I have worked for everything we own. (By the way, I don't qualify for financial aid so we work for the money I use for school.)I believe I am a very responsible person. I have been a volunteer EMT & first responder for 2 1/2 years and I am only 20! All that I am asking is please give it a thought before you write such insensitive comments here.

Amy I feel for this family, however your comments are incorrect. Renters insurance is not very expensive at all. In fact it is very in-expensive. As far as nessesary? If you loose everything you own, is it nessessary to replace it? Unless you have the money to do that, you need insurance. Also, having insurance and paying taxes is part of owning a home. If you can't affort those, you really can't afford to own a home. I don't mean to be insensitive, but that's just common sense.

i too work with the mother of this family,i have personally seen her give her lunch away because someone was hungry.so if someone would do that why would she or the family burn their own house down?i dont think you people who dont know the family understand the concept of accidents happen.....my prayers are with this family

Amy you sound pretty insensitive yourself.

i know this family very very well and they would never burn their house..they are the kind of people who would give their home to someone who needed it.now they need a home if i had the money i would give it to them for a new home....God Bless this family

Look, these people are wonderful people that do not deserve the harrasment and evil comments that are posed on this page. My prayers and thoughts go out to this family and if you do not have something nice to say do not say anything at all. If you were in the same situation, would you like people claiming that you just want insurance money or that your looking for pity when you have lost everything? Please be a little more compassionate and helpful to this family.

Anonymous, If you read the aricle you would know that the explosion was a propane tank outside the house. Also when you have ammunition exposed to any high hiet source it is going to go off, there is nothing wrong with having ammunition in your house, and as far as having enough ammunition to cause an explosion it only takes one round to be an explosion. You may also want to rethink your veiw on insurance because most company will not insure a manufactured home after they reach a certain age which was the case in this fire. The fire has already been ruled accidental by our investigator, so can sleep better now that you know that.

For anonymous on Jan 9 @ 4:18 pm...Just an FYI...Not everybody has homeowners insurance for fire, etc. If you are renting a home it is not required (therefore very expensive if not totally necessary) Have you ever thought about that before you go posting your uppity comment about "hope they learned their lesson". You sound like an insentisive jerk. I wish all the best for this family in their struggles this year.

Most responsible people & tax payers have insurance. No I don't like to make sacrifices and pay house insurance and health insurance but we do and do with out others things we could buy instead like newer vehicles and enough ammunition that would actually cause an expolsion in a fire. So many do not pay insurance and the others have to make up the difference. Surely they learned their lesson the first time and had home owners insurance.

Hey, just saying is all. You have to admit that 2 fires in a year is highly suspicious. But we all know that trailers are magnets to fire and tornados.

I work with the mother as well. I know this was a matter of bad luck. We at are working on taking donations to help the family, as they were not able to have insurance on this house. Please call 254-248-7485 for donation/benefit information. Thanks to all those who are interested in assisting this family. You will be blessed for your efforts.

Please post a address or place for donations.

I work with the mother of this family, and I have no doubt that this is a matter of circumstance, and terrible luck. Our hearts and prayers go out to them as they rebuild, again.

TAXPAYER, have you ever heard of coincidence? Hm? Probably not.

Posted by: Nic Location: Killeen on Jan 8, 2009 at 11:09 PM
The story clearly states that the fire started in out buildings on the property and then spread to the home. It was caused by an electrical short. Because this house was donated to them after losing the first to fire, that would probably mean that they didn't have insurance the first time disaster struck. It seems they just have a lot of bad luck. So read the story again Taxpayer and Jes and quit being so mean!

Carma is gonna get all you fools. Just because someone suffers more than one tragedy in their life someone has to think it is intention for personal gain. You all should be ashamed of the ill thoughts you have.

to sharlet and anonymous in waco: this world would be a much better place if there were more people like you in it. God bless you both and bless the familes as well. I know what you are going through.

I smell something rotten here....did they need insurance money?

Posted by: Anonymous1 Location: Waco on Jan 8, 2009 at 01:33 PM
I dont have much, but I have much more than this family does now. My thoughts and prayers do go out to them. Is there anyway KWTX could either start or advertise some charity for this family. I would love to give clothes, books, school supplies (if children lived there)...etc.
