(January 09, 2009)—A South Texas fugitive who was the subject of a global manhunt since Interpol issued an arrest warrant for him for allegedly raping four girls and videotaping the sex acts was arrested Thursday in Thailand.

Darren Ray Castleberry, 41 of Spring, was arrested in a central Bangkok shop, Thai police said.

Castleberry is believed to have been living in Thailand since 2006.

The Nation, a Bangkok newspaper, reported that Castleberry is detained at the Thai Immigration Bureau pending extradition back to the United States.

Castleberry has been charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, are popular with sex offenders due to lax law enforcement, corruption in the justice system and poverty that forces children into prostitution.
