(January 09, 2009)—Texans are paying more at the pump this week as gasoline prices halted their months-long decline and jumped an average of 16 cents this week.

AAA-Texas reported Thursday the average retail price of a gallon of gas reached $1.62.

The cost of gasoline across Texas is still 13 cents less than the national average, the report indicated

AAA-Texas also says gasoline statewide is still about $1.30 lower than in early January 2008.

Amarillo had the most expensive gasoline in Texas at an average $1.68 per gallon, up 22 cents from one week ago.

The survey found San Antonio with the least expensive per-gallon price, at $1.59, up 15 cents.

AAA-Texas cites factors like the conflict in Gaza and OPEC's recent announcement on cutting production could be reasons the price of fuel has risen.

Why am I not the least bit surprised?? The closer it gets to the inauguration, oil prices rise. Hmmmmmmm....... Low gas prices have been a relief for so many, the only relief actually. But something tells me we will see prices rise quickly over the next few months. Hope I am wrong.

As stated below, the market had a short rally due to false hopes of economic recovery and those future traders and speculators were at it again, jacking up the price of crude. They ought to be arrested. Our law makers in washington are sitting on their butts doing nothing about this type of senseless price gouging. Over the past few years Americans have been ripped off. There never was any gas shortage.

They increased the price because the Legislature and/or Congress started talking about raising the gas tax by 10 cents a gallon just a few days ago. Any time a legislator or the news media talk about gas prices going up, the oil companies raise the price. It happens every time without fail and has been that way for years. The oil companies think they can increase the price without everyone hollering about it. That is the main reason I keep telling everyone that just because the price of gas drops, don't stop conserving it. That is the only way a citizen can stop the prices from going back up. Lawmakers solve the problem? They are the ones that just caused it.

And what do they claim is the justification for this price increase? No Hurricane; no floods; weather is warmer; no refineries shut down. Well the stock market made a modest comeback the other day and price per barrel went up over $40. But that's the price speculated for 3 months in the future so why should the price at the pump go up? One station went up 3 times in one day. They have already paid for the gas in the tanks at the station so why should the price change? Law makers need to get a handle on this. They need to protect the consumers.
