(January 9, 2009)--Hundreds of police officers from across the state were among thousands of mourners who attended funeral services Friday for a slain Dallas police officer.

Police squad cars in Sr. Cpl. Norman Smith's funeral cortege stretched for miles as the procession wound toward The Potter's House on the southeastern edge of Dallas.

The immense church was where Smith and his wife worshipped.

One by one, dignitaries and Smith's comrades from the Dallas anti-gang unit offered emotional tributes and eulogies behind the flag-draped coffin containing the officer's remains.

The traditional skirl of a bagpipe also pierced the quiet.

Charles Patrick Payne, 26, is jailed on a capital murder charge in Smith's slaying.

The officer was shot through the door of a South Dallas apartment when he and several other officers attempted to serve an arrest warrant Tuesday night.
