(January 9, 2009)—A fire that broke out late Friday afternoon in a mobile home in rural Hill County claimed the lives of Clarence Keefer, 81, and his wife Aretha, 78, officials confirmed Friday evening.

Both were former Baptist missionaries, officials said.

The couple’s Chihuahua also died the fire.

Firefighters found the two in the back of their mobile home, where the flames evidently trapped them.

Officials said Aretha Keefer called 911 to report the fire, but she and her husband were unable to escape from the burning mobile home.

Both evidently died of smoke inhalation, officials said.

Autopsies were ordered.

The fire broke out around 4 p.m. in the mobile home the couple shared at the intersection of Ranch Road 309 and County Road 1305 in Woodbury, a town of just a few dozen residents about 12 miles northwest of Hillsboro.

Firefighters from Hillsboro, Whitney and Peoria responded to the scene.

Funeral arrangements for the Keefers were pending Friday night.
