(January 9, 2009)—Waco police are warning about a flyer left on windshields of cars, advising of a parking violation and seeking donations to a police organization in order to avoid towing.

The flyer, which police said Friday is in full color “and fairly convincing to a citizen,” is fraudulent.

The flyer is issued under the name of a retired officer, but he was contacted and told Waco police he knows nothing about it.

The flyer advises that vehicles are parked in spots reserved for employees or customers and says, “To avoid having this vehicle towed before the end of business today, you can make a donation to Waco Citizens on Patrol…. a donation is expected on or before January 19th, 2009.”

Several residents have complained about the flyers, and a fraud report is being made, police said.
