(January 13, 2009)—An Amarillo man and his teenage son died in a lake accident during a hunting trip in the Texas Panhandle.

Donley County Sheriff Butch Blackburn said Hotan Ahnood, 17, was using a kayak to go out onto Greenbelt Lake to retrieve a bird when the small vessel capsized.

The teenager’s father, Bashir Ahnood, 46, went into the water to try to save his son.

Both drowned.

The accident happened Saturday, a day when temperatures were below freezing.

The bodies were recovered Sunday.

Greenbelt Lake is about 50 miles southeast of Amarillo.

My prayers go out to the family: however, answer me this ...... If you can noyt handle water [swimming] - why get in it, on it , by it ..... This always seems to amaze me. My wife can't swim - yet she stays away from the water .... why ... respect .... fear ..... smarts ....

Wow!! Try to go out and hunt, have fun with your kids and something tragic happens. This is horrible. That just goes to show you that there is a tissue like vail that seperates this life from the next. Nobody knows when their time is coming. Live life and let your loved ones know that you love them!!!

Steve, are you trying to be "funny" about 2 people dying? You didn't succeed.

People, please wear a life vest when on water. They do come in camo for all you hunters. I pray for the relatives.

How courageous of the father...risking his life to save his son. Although I'm sorry they both died, the admiration I have for the father is great.

It's not worth going out in the water for one bird when it's freezing, even if you paddle out in a kayak. This is still a terrible loss, God bless.

Sounds like a chilling experience. I suppose neither was wearing a life jacket.
