(January 13, 2009)—Students will return to class Wednesday in makeshift classrooms at churches after a suspicious fire destroyed Lockney High School.

No one was hurt in the fire Sunday night when the building was unoccupied.

The fire also damaged part of the adjacent junior high school.

Floyd County investigators suspect arson in the fire that Sheriff Paul Raissez says started on the second floor of the high school.

Classes were canceled Monday and Tuesday.

Lockney school district director of technology Charles Keaton said classes will resume Wednesday morning.

Students helped set up at First United Methodist Church for the junior high.

First Baptist Church will be the site for high school classes.

Keaton says it is unreal to think someone would do this to what he calls "the heart and soul of this community."

Lockney is a town of about 1,800, about 60 miles northeast of Lubbock.

I really hate to hear this. Floyd County and Lockney are not prosperous places and do not have endless revenues which to pull from to rebuild. Hopefully they are able to apply for grants or something. They have long been talking of consolidating with Floydada (10 miles away), now may be the time they actually do it. I hear they have a "person of interest". Hope they are able to prove it and ship them straight to prison for a LONG time.
