(September 11, 2006)--A police official in the Bahamas is providing a different account of the death of the 20-year-old son of Anna Nicole Smith.

The official says Daniel Smith died Sunday while visiting his mother in the hospital where she'd given birth last week.

Earlier, authorities said Daniel Smith died in bed, and that his body was found Sunday morning.

According to the police official, he actually died Sunday at Doctors' Hospital in Nassau, where his mother had given birth to a girl on Thursday.

He says an autopsy is underway.

A statement on Anna Nicole Smith's Web site says the reality TV star and former Playboy playmate is "absolutely devastated by the loss of her son."

The statement says drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been involved.

Smith was born in Houston as Vicki Lynn Hogan and grew up in Mexia.

She married Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II in 1994, when she was 26 and he was 89.

He died the following year, triggering a legal battle with Marshall's son, Pierce Marshall, over her share of the estate.
