Bush Huddles With Republicans On Capitol Hill

(September 14, 2006)—It was just a quick trip to the microphone for President Bush following his meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

The president had a closed-door chat with some members of his own party, who are divided about whether to grant the administration more power to deal with terror suspects.

Mr. Bush wants two bills passed.

One would allow tougher interrogations of detainees.

The other would clarify how to prosecute suspects.

When Bush emerged, he didn't say anything about what happened in the meeting.

All he did was thank a House panel for approving his administration's proposals.

He says it'll give him the "tools and wherewithal to protect this country."

But the impasse continues with the Senate, where the Armed Services Committee Thursday may finalize an alternative to what Mr. Bush wants.
