BRYAN (February 14, 2009)--An inmate who escaped from the Brazos County jail was back behind bars Saturday.

Ronald Earl Pennie, 29, was discovered missing around 9 p.m. Friday, but was recaptured early Saturday near the Bryan Golf Course.

Pennie escaped through the recreational yard of the detention center on Sandy Point Road, according to authorities.

The College Station resident is serving time for aggravated kidnapping, burglary and resisting arrest.

He had been in jail since September 24.

A search for Pennie began immediately Friday night and included personnel on horseback, dogs and a helicopter.

Authorities combed the area around the center, went to Pennie's home, and even contacted his mother, who said she had not seen or heard from her son.

About 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Brazos County deputies responded to Pepe's Taco at South College and Lynn Streets, where Pennie and another man were standing behind the store.

The two ran and ended up in a nearby creek.

Pennie eventually surrendered to authorities.

Pennie has spent time in the Brazos County Jail 11 times since 1997 prior to his latest stay, according to the county Web site.

More than half of the arrests involved charges of evading arrest.

His latest arrest was his second in 2008 for aggravated kidnapping.

As of Saturday morning, bond had not been set for the escape charge.

His previous bond was $168,000.
