CORYELL COUNTY (February 15, 2009)—Authorities Monday identified the Central Texas teenager who was killed Sunday afternoon when the car he was driving crashed into a bank of cedar trees along a roadside as Gerald Ignacio Riggs.

Riggs was partially thrown from the car after the entire drivers’ side of the Chevrolet Cavalier was ripped open by the crash.

Texas Department of Public Safety trooper David Poston said the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Residents who live near the crash site, on Farm-to-Market Rd 929 about 5.5 miles east of the State Highway 36 bypass, in Gatesville, reported the crash at about 4:40 p.m.

Coryell Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Medical Service personnel, Gatesville and Coryell City fire departments responded to the scene.

Coryell County Justice of the Peace Larry McDonald pronounced Riggs dead a little after 5 p.m. Sunday.
