GALVESTON (February 17, 2009)--Health investigators are trying to determine what caused the separate deaths this weekend of a 1-year-old boy from Hitchcock and a Texas City teenager.

Texas Children's Hospital in Houston notified Galveston County health officials of the probable meningitis-related death of a 15-year-old boy.

The Galveston County Daily News reports Galveston County Health District spokesman Kurt Koopman said the hospital listed the cause of death as probable meningitis because of the symptoms the teen, Dandre Alexander, displayed.

No autopsy is planned.

Koopman said initial blood work on the unidentified 1-year-old, who died at Mainland Medical Center, indicated some form of bacteria in his system, but not meningitis.

He told the newspaper that while the cases are under investigation, the health district was not recommending those who may have come in contact with either boy take any preventive medicines.
