WASHINGTON (February 17, 2009)--President Barack Obama Tuesday signed into law the most sweeping economic package in decades, a rescue plan designed to create millions of jobs and boost consumer spending.

According to government figures, the package could mean thousands of new jobs in Central Texas.

The $787 billion package aims to reverse the nation's economic free fall.

It pumps money into infrastructure projects, health care, renewable energy development and conservation.

There's a $400 tax break for most individual workers and $800 for couples.

It dishes out tens of billions of dollars to states.

According to government figures released earlier Tuesday, the package will lead to the creation of 269,000 jobs in Texas, which is second only to California with 396,000 jobs.

In the 12-county 17th Congressional District, which includes Waco and McLennan County, the package will mean about 8,400 new jobs, according to the government figures.

In the eight-county 31st Congressional District, it will mean about 9,000 new jobs, the government said.

Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, who voted in favor of the measure, said the massive bill is needed “to help pull our economy out of the worst recession since the Great Depression.”

“In the last three months alone, 1.6 million hard-working Americans have lost their jobs. That is more than double the population of our 12-county congressional district,” he said.

“If we don’t take bold action now, unemployment will get worse, families’ retirement savings will be hit even harder and the recession could deepen,” he said.

The passage of the bill was a major political victory for Mr. Obama, who took office less than a month ago.

Mr. Obama said the government has begun the essential work of keeping the American dream alive in our time.

Mr. Obama signed the bill at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science.

The setting was to underscore the new law's investments in "green" energy-related jobs.

Just more of the same Hog (pork) and Pony show. Are we supposed to believe these 8,400 jobs are supposed to appear out of nowhere? I think the money will just end up in the pockets of the politicians and leaches of society that are too lazy to get a job or that just simply feel they are entitled. Wait! That makes it sound like nothing will "CHANGE"!

I just love going to work everyday to see my hard earned money handed out to those sitting on their lazy butts waiting for their monthly welfare check. This bill is a joke, Obama is a joke, all of congress and the house is a joke and this country is becoming a joke to the rest of the world. I will be so happy in 6 years when I will retire early and move out of this country. By then the socialist leaders you all elected will have run this country into the ground!!!
