CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (February 19, 2009)—Police were on alert in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez after several signs appeared across the violent city warning that more officers would be killed unless the police chief resigns.

The signs showed up a day after the police force's second-in-command and three other officers were slain.

Meanwhile, coroners performed autopsies on the bodies of the four officers, including the city police chief's right-hand man.

Sacramento Perez was the operations director for the 1,700-member force of the city just across the Rio Grande from El Paso.

Gunmen ambushed the officers Tuesday afternoon while they were sitting in their patrol car on a street near the U.S. consulate.

No arrests have been made.

About 50 police officers have been killed in the past year in attacks blamed on drug gangs trying to consolidate territory.

Many officers have quit out of fear for their lives, often after their names have appeared on hit lists left in public in Juarez.

In another northern border city, Reynosa, video footage aired Wednesday showing masked policemen evacuating children from a school.

Some of the students wore bulletproof vests as they were taken to safety during an hours-long gun battle Tuesday that left five gunmen dead and seven police injured.

The battle lasted several hours, terrorizing residents who dropped to the ground or fled indoors.

This is what happens when you half heartedly go after the entrenched criminal element in a very corrupt society. We should watch our own country before we start getting too much of this in the USA since the corruption here seems to be getting WAY out of hand.
