BROWNSVILLE (February 19, 2009)--A gun battle across the border Thursday forced the temporary closure of the bridge connecting Brownsville with Matamoros, Mexico.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio closed southbound traffic on the Gateway International Bridge for about 30 minutes Thursday afternoon.

Lucio said a gunfight ensued while Mexican police were investigating warehouses in Matamoros.

The closure was meant to prevent the violence from reaching into Texas.

Customs and Border Protection says northbound traffic continued as normal.

Field operations officers checked incoming vehicles.

Officers were seen wearing Kevlar vests, and some carried assault rifles.
