AUSTIN (February 24, 2009)--A new study of sexual education in Texas claims the state heavily relies on abstinence-only programs littered with errors, mistruths, distortions and other problems.

A watchdog group that monitors religious influence in public schools commissioned the report.

"Texas is failing families when it comes to sexuality education," said David Wiley, a health education professor at Texas State University-San Marcos and one of the co-authors of the report from the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund.

"Our classrooms are perpetuating a conspiracy of silence that robs young people of the reliable information they need to make responsible life decisions."

Texas gets more federal abstinence funding than any other state and has one of the highest teen birthrates in the nation, TFN Education Fund President Kathy Miller said.

The study, which analyzed thousands of pages of curriculum materials, district policies and other documents, says 96 percent of Texas school districts teach students nothing about responsible pregnancy and disease prevention except abstinence.

abstinence only is a stupid way of teaching sex ed. Teens need to know how to be safe if they choose to have sex. As someone that received abstinence only sex ed in high school, we were not told any of the benefits of condoms or birth control all we were told was that condoms can break. The system in my school was not information it was a fear session. We were not even given any suggestions if you do choose to have sex, not even to ask your partner to be tested. So yes i agree that Sex Education in texas schools needs to be revamped something awful.

ok, I am a Christian mother of 2 and stron gly beleive that sex education is something that parents need to step up to the plate on. It isnt embarassing. It isnt akward. It deserves truth. I was a promiscuious (sp??) teenager and the reality of that haunts me to this day. I do believe fear mongering takes place in today's sex ed curriculum but NOTHING is ever said about the emotional damage sex before marriage creates. Yeah, ok so you might get this STD or that disease but COMEON...the bigger picture is that one your virginity is gone, it is gone and no matter how much you love your future spouse there will ALWAYS be 3 people in the room...you, your spouse and your memory of others. This is the big sacrifice--the fact that you can never give yourself wholly to the person you love most in this world. Parents---talk to your kids and stop relying on the schools to do it. Sex is beautiful and fun and a gift from God--within marriage.
