(February 24, 2009) - The Texas Attorney General's office is looking into complaints about a possible paperwork backlog in the Falls County District Clerk's office.

Representatives from the Attorney General's office held a meeting Friday about the issue, but, Falls County District Clerk, Larry Hoelscher, who said he has been ill, didn't attend.

Representatives were also at the Falls County Courthouse Monday and Tuesday.

Hoelscher who wasn't in his office when News 10 arrived Tuesday, said he has been sick and says his staff has had to deal with a short staff which has caused his office to fall behind in paperwork.

But he said and his staff are working on the problem as best they can.

A district clerk’s duties range from filing criminal indictments to civil lawsuits, and, in some cases taking child support payments for the State Attorney General.

Falls County’s judge wouldn’t comment on the issue except to say it will be addressed at an upcoming budget session.

I know the girls in the District Clerks office personally, they are very helpful and hardworking, I think its easy to stand back and point fingers. I am not saying its a perfect situation the office may be some what behind, but has any one considered the fact the work load my have increased over the years. I think some of these comments are very unfair and some are not even addressing the current issues!!!

The county judge is in charge over the budget for that office. Therefore if he sees that they are understaffed, which there is no way in the world he could not know, then it is up to him to go before the commissioners and correct the problem. He was asked for a comment and decided to stick his head in the sand and avoid taking a chance on hurting someones feelings. County judge is a tough job, if you can't handle it go back to working as a part time lawyer.
