TYLER (March 3, 2009)--Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. plans to close its two fabrication operations in Tyler, a move that will cut 300 jobs.

CB&I designs and makes systems used in energy fields.

Some of the employees will be transferred to the company's Beaumont facility.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph reports the shutdown will not affect the company's Tyler engineering center, which employs 360 people.

Spokeswoman Jan Sieving says the Beaumont facility has deep-water access and is closer to the company's projects in that region.

CB&I acquired Howe-Baker International in Tyler in 2000 in a $145 million deal including cash, stock and assumed debt, according to the CB&I Web site.

Howe-Baker specializes in the construction of hydrocarbon processing plants for the refining, petrochemical and natural gas industries.

The Tyler area has lost more than 2,000 industrial and manufacturing positions recently.
