(September 21, 2006)--A third food company says it is recalling fresh spinach, as the E. coli outbreak has widened to 23 states.
RLB Food Distributors of West Caldwell, N.J. is recalling Balducci's and FreshPro spinach products distributed on the East Coast.
RLB says some of its spinach could have come from Natural Selection Foods.
Natural Selection and River Ranch Fresh Foods had earlier announced recalls.
Investigators are focusing their search for the source of the E. coli outbreak on nine farms in California.
Health officials say they are also checking processing plants.
Inspectors are checking the farms for signs of flooding or other cases in which contaminated surface areas might have come into contact with crops.
Health officials continue to recommend that consumers not eat fresh spinach.
