CORSICANA (April 1, 2009)—An 18-month-old girl who was last seen with her mother’s 22-year-old boyfriend, Jose Martinez, in Navarro County was found Wednesday morning in an SUV, next to which police found Martinez dead.
A phone tip led police Wednesday to the 3500 block of Oak Valley Road in a semi-rural area of southwest Corsicana where Officers Travis Wallace and Ronnie Phillips found Martinez’s Ford Expedition behind a residence.
Jasliene Morales was locked inside the vehicle.
The officers broke a window to rescue the girl, who was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital, but appeared to be OK, police said.
Martinez’s death was ruled a suicide, police said.
Sandra Espinoza told investigators she last saw the toddler with Martinez, who dropped her off for work at 5 p.m. Monday.

Since when is there not an autopsy ordered in an un-natural death? Why the insistence that it's suicide, case closed? Could it not have been a carjacking/murder, where they left the kiddo alive? Seems a bit too swift that as soon as they find the car, they solve the mystery. Call me suspicious, but this whole case stinks, from the refusal to issue an Amber alert, to the refusal to do an autopsy.
Ross there are always a few on here that will find any possible way to be critical of not only the offender but often times the victim. Unfortunatley because this is a public forum we have to put up with them.
I am so glad that this child is safe. This sounds like a story where there is a lot of information that the public is not receiving. There are many good and many bad situations both blood and emotional relationships in which to leave children. I think that each parent must use his/her BEST judgment as childcare arrangements are being made. That being said, those making comments about boyfriends as caregivers - STATISTICALLY they are the most dangerous people for children. I am a researcher/educator and I do this research all of the time. Now, again, it is not to say that there are not WONDERFUL boyfriends out there or girlfriends caring for children just as there are LOUSY dads and moms caring for children, but again STATISTICALLY, boyfriends are the most dangerous choices.
