DALLAS (April 2, 2009)--Dallas school system officials say a high school football coach beat a student so severely with a "canoe paddle" that the wood board cracked.

A school district report says Lincoln High School coach Jerry Sands had to taped the paddle back together so the "licking" could resume.

In an affidavit, Sands wrote that he wanted to help the student "make it in life."

The report obtained by The Dallas Morning News says the student suffered severe bruising and welts to his lower back, upper thighs and buttocks and was referred to a doctor for treatment.

Paddling is legal in Texas but prohibited in Dallas public schools.

No criminal charges have been filed and school district police suspended their investigation because of a lack of evidence in the 2007 case.

School principal Earl Jones said he gave Sands an oral reprimand, then a written reprimand after an anonymous letter told school staff of the paddling.

Now Jones has received a 20-day suspension and will be reassigned to another campus.

Sands has been on paid administrative leave since September.

Bet this coach was fed up to his ears with this student but on the other hand, he cannot be excused as that is why there is so much abuse that gets to this point so he has to pay the consequences for hurting this young boy. A paddling should not be a beating. There is a big difference here. The coach has a hot head.

If we did more paddling, kids would not be in trouble so much. Def. for discipline but an occassionally beating keeps them in line...Waco has way to much crimes/pregnancy involving kids and if parents were able to discipline them w/o child services being called, My taxes would be helping me more.

It takes way more than a paddling to help a kid "make it in life". Not a good excuse for beating and leaving bruises, Coach. A normal paddling, may or may not be out of line depending on the circumstances. If the child was first told to stop the behavior and warned that he would get a paddling the next time he repeated the same behavior, then give him a normal paddling or some other effective discipline, if possible.
