(October 3, 2006)--Mexico's Foreign Relations Department has sent a diplomatic note to the US government, protesting plans to build hundreds of miles of fence along their shared border.

The note says the proposed border fence would "hurt" relations between the two neighbors and asserts that only an integral reform would solve the immigration problem.

Mexican President Vicente Fox has rallied against the barrier, calling it "shameful" and comparing it to the Berlin Wall that once Germany.

However, US lawmakers facing midterm elections have shown a greater appetite for border security measures.

On Friday, the US Senate approved a bill authorizing 700 miles of new fencing in border states and more than $1 billion to build it.
