BELL COUNTY (April 18, 2009)--A major accident Saturday evening south of Temple sent seven people to the hospital one of whom later died.

The accident happened at about 5:00 p.m. on FM 93 near Highway 95 south of Temple.

Emergency crews from Little River Academy and Texas DPS troopers responded.

According to troopers at the scene, a blue SUV was westbound on FM 93 when the driver pulled onto the shoulder, allowing a Black Jeep Cherokee to pass.

At about that time, a white Chevy that was eastbound on the road collided with the Cherokee.

The SUV was also involved in the crash.

The SUV rolled over into a drainage ditch.

The eastbound Chevy caught on fire.

Emergency crews arrived used Jaws of Life to free one passenger from the wreckage of the Cherokee.

Troopers said all seven people in those three vehicles were taken to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

Catherine Turnbaugh of Temple, 43 years old, was pronounced dead after the accident.

Three, including a child, were in critical condition.

State law clearly specifies that the shoulder should be used for one purpose and one purpose only, EMERGENCY. i.e. car broke down, tire flat. Anyone who pulls over on the shoulder to let pass is just being blatently dangerous. Have you seen the shoulders of the roads around here lately.
