LEON COUNTY (April 25, 2009)--Trains could be running again by Sunday after a fire and a derailment that damaged a railroad bridge in a remote area Leon County.

The trestle over Keechi Creek caught fire early Thursday morning.

Four engines and six cars of a Union Pacific freight train derailed after the engineer initiated an emergency braking procedure in an attempt to avoid the burning bridge.

Authorities are still not certain how the fire started, but said it could have been caused by a lightning strike from a storm the night before.

Some evacuations were ordered after the derailment.

Crews were forced to build a road through the heavily wooded area in order to complete repairs on the damaged bridge.

It is rare that a conductor applies the brakes on a train. Usually the engineer (who is in charge of operating the train) would make an emergency application of the brakes. I'm not saying your reporting was wrong, but I find it very common for reporters to say that the conductor applied the brakes. I am a retired engineer with 27 years on the job.
