WACO (April 28, 2009) - Waco police have talked down a man who was threatening to jump from the Highway 6 flyover above I-35.

Officials shut down the interstate in both directions during the standoff that lasted about 2 hours on Tuesday night.

Police were able to bring the man down just after 10 p.m.

This same overpass was the scene of a suicide earlier this month.

On April 5, Jessie Zapata, 33, jumped from the overpass just before 9 p.m.
Police believe that before he committed suicide he killed a woman whose body was found about an hour later in her home in the Waco suburb of Lacy-Lakeview.
Police identified the slain woman as Carolina Tovar, 28.

Police said she was a mother of two children, both of whom are less than 10 years old.

Police said Zapata, who was the father of Tovar's daughter, was at the victim's home shortly before she died.

There was no record of earlier disturbance calls at the residence, police said.

The two had apparently been in a relationship for about six years.

Just another way for people who want attention to garner attention. IF THEY REALLY wanted to commit suicide, they would get onto the bridge and jump. That's the problem with "attempted suicides", they always make sure someone KNOWS that they are TRYING to kill themselves. I grew up in a small town, our next door neighbor was a woman who "attempted suicide" about once every other month. She ALWAYS made sure that my mother, who was an emergency room nurse, was notified that she was "attemptiong suicide" AGAIN. Mom would calmly go over, go inside the home, revive the woman, call the ambulance, and send her to the hospital where she would stay in the NUT WARD for a week or two. This went on for a couple of years until ONE DAY, when this woman tried it again, mom went over there and told her of ten different ways to commit suicide without excessive blood or pain and told her to use one next time because mom wouldn't save her again! SUDDENLY she was cured! Never tried again. No pity from me!

I agree with Ratso, have you ever noticed the majority of people who threaten suicide always back down. They need attention even if it's negative. What they really need is help....or a gun or knife.
