WEST (May 4, 2009)—Police in West are now investigating the disappearance of as much as $20,000 from an activity fund at West High School.

In an email, West ISD Superintendent Marty Crawford said, "The outside review is complete and the results were parallel with the District's. We have filed a complaint with the West Police Department and are cooperating with them."

Crawford estimated that as much as $20,000 is missing from the fund, which does not receive taxpayer dollars.

In a letter posted late last Wednesday on the district’s Web site, Crawford said the missing money was discovered during an internal review during which “sponsor/coach ledgers, bank statements and deposit receipts” were compared.

“It was confirmed that some accounts were indeed short of the cash as marked on deposit slips,” Crawford said.

The district asked a third party to check the findings of the internal review.

Crawford said it appears the money was taken during the fall semester and in February and March.

The missing funds were discovered when an organization sponsor attempted to withdraw money from the fund for an approved school activity.
