(October 22, 2006)—Space travel and space games meet extreme sports this weekend in New Mexico as more than 20 teams compete for more than $2.5 million in prizes in the two-day X-Prize Cup event.

Most of the prize money came from NASA in an attempt to create interest and private development of space tourism.

More than 200,000 visitors were expected to attend the event at Las Cruces International Airport, where they were also able to see the development version of the Rocket Racing League’s X-Racer, which is billed as the first NASCAR vehicle to soar into the sky at the 2007 Cup.
